Methodology & Data Sources
This calculator uses log-linear statistical interpolation over official and reputable demographic distribution reports:
- United States: Income distributions are sourced from the US Census Bureau Annual Social and Economic Supplement (ASEC). Net worth percentiles are drawn from the Federal Reserve Board Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF).
- United Kingdom: Gross income data is derived from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and HMRC Survey of Personal InSPI. Household net worth is modeled on the ONS Wealth and Assets Survey (WAS).
- Global rankings: Per-capita net income is calculated on World Bank poverty and distribution database indices. Global adult wealth benchmarks are based on the UBS Global Wealth Database models.
For example, a US household with an annual gross income of $100,000 and a net worth of $500,000 ranks in the Top 42% of income and the Top 32% of net worth.
Frequently asked questions
What is a wealth percentile?
A wealth percentile indicates what percentage of the population you have more net worth than. For example, if you are in the 90th percentile of wealth in the US, your net worth is higher than 90% of US households, putting you in the top 10%.
How is global wealth percentile calculated?
Global wealth rankings compare your net worth per adult against the global adult population, using statistical distributions published in reports like the Credit Suisse/UBS Global Wealth Report. To be in the top 1% of wealthy adults globally requires a net worth of roughly $1.05 million USD.
What is household equivalized income?
Equivalized income is an adjustment that accounts for differences in household size and composition. Because larger households benefit from economies of scale (e.g., shared housing and bills), we divide total income by the household scale factor to compare purchasing power fairly on an individual basis.
