Worked example
On a A$90,000 salary with 12% employer super and A$5,000 salary sacrifice, gross concessional contributions are $15,800. After 15% contributions tax, $13,430 goes into super before any after-tax contributions.
Formula and assumptions
Employer super is salary x employer super %. Gross concessional contributions equal employer super plus salary sacrifice, and standard contributions tax is modelled at 15%.
Salary-sacrifice take-home cost is estimated as sacrifice x (1 - marginal tax rate). The projection compounds the current balance annually and adds net contributions at the end of each year.
Frequently asked questions
How does salary sacrifice into super save tax?
Salary-sacrifice contributions are made before personal income tax and are generally taxed in the super fund at 15%, so the saving depends on your marginal tax rate and contribution cap room.
What contribution caps does this calculator use?
It uses A$30,000 for the concessional contributions cap and A$120,000 for the non-concessional contributions cap.
Does the calculator include Division 293 tax?
No. It models the standard 15% contributions tax and flags cap excesses, but it does not include Division 293 tax for high-income earners.
Is this Australia-specific?
Yes. It is built around Australian superannuation, salary sacrifice, concessional contributions, and non-concessional contributions.
