Frequently asked questions
How is US take-home pay calculated?
Federal income tax applies to your salary minus the standard deduction ($16,100 single / $32,200 married joint for 2026) across seven brackets from 10% to 37%. FICA adds 6.2% Social Security (up to $184,500 of wages) and 1.45% Medicare. A $75,000 single filer takes home about $5,132.71 a month before state taxes.
Does this include state income tax?
Not yet — figures are federal only (income tax, Social Security, and Medicare). State income tax ranges from zero (e.g. Texas, Florida, Washington) to over 13% in California, so your actual take-home may be lower depending on where you live.
How does a 401(k) contribution change my paycheck?
Traditional 401(k) contributions come out before federal income tax, so a $500 monthly contribution costs less than $500 in take-home pay — often $380–$430 depending on your bracket. Contributions still pay Social Security and Medicare tax.
What are the 2026 federal tax brackets?
For single filers: 10% to $12,400, 12% to $50,400, 22% to $105,700, 24% to $201,775, 32% to $256,225, 35% to $640,600, and 37% above. Married-filing-jointly thresholds are roughly double. Only income within each band is taxed at that band's rate.
