MPG and Trip Cost: How to Calculate Fuel Costs & Travel Expenses

Road trips require planning, and the cost of fuel is often the largest single expense. This guide details how to calculate your trip's cost, split travel expenses, and navigate differences between unit systems.

The core trip cost formula

Calculating the exact cost of driving from point A to point B is straightforward when broken down into three stages:

(1) Determine Fuel Needed: Fuel volume = Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency. Make sure your distance unit (miles or kilometers) matches the distance component of your fuel efficiency.

(2) Determine Fuel Cost: Fuel Cost = Fuel volume × Fuel Price (per gallon or per liter).

(3) Calculate Grand Total & Split: Total Cost = Fuel Cost + Tolls + Other Costs. If traveling in a group, the Cost Per Passenger = Total Cost ÷ Number of Travelers.

ScenarioCalculationAnswer
US Road Trip: 500 miles at 25 MPG US ($3.50/gal)(500 ÷ 25) × $3.5020 gallons → $70.00 fuel cost
UK Commute: 60 miles at 45 MPG UK (£1.40/L)60 ÷ 45 = 1.33 gal. 1.33 × 4.546 L = 6.06 L. 6.06 × £1.406.06 liters → £8.48 fuel cost
European Tour: 450 km at 6.5 L/100km (€1.65/L)(450 ÷ 100) × 6.5 × €1.6529.25 liters → €48.26 fuel cost
Shared Trip: 300 miles, 30 MPG US ($3.80/gal) + $15 tolls, 3 people(300 ÷ 30) × $3.80 = $38. ($38 + $15) ÷ 3$53.00 total → $17.67 per person

The conversion trap: US vs. UK Gallons

One of the most common mistakes in fuel calculation is mixing up US and UK gallons. The UK imperial gallon is about 20% larger than the US liquid gallon:

  • 1 US Gallon = 3.78541 liters
  • 1 UK Imperial Gallon = 4.54609 liters

This means that a car getting 30 MPG in the US would be rated at 36.03 MPG in the UK, simply because the UK gallon is larger. If you use UK MPG with US fuel pricing per gallon, your calculations will show a cost that is 20% too low.

Maximizing your trip efficiency

US default trip cost (100 mi)
$11.67
Cost per traveler (4 passengers)
$2.92
Savings per person by carpooling
75% off

Car sharing or carpooling is the single most effective way to reduce travel costs. Splitting a $70 trip cost among four people drops the cost to just $17.50 per person, saving each traveler 75% compared to driving alone.

Additionally, simple changes in driving style can increase fuel efficiency by 10% to 30%. Avoiding rapid acceleration, keeping tires properly inflated, and reducing highway speed from 80 mph to 70 mph can significantly reduce fuel consumption, lowering your total trip expense.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a road trip?

To calculate fuel cost, divide your trip distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency to find the total fuel needed, then multiply that volume by the fuel price. For example, if you drive 300 miles in a car that gets 30 MPG, you need 10 gallons of fuel (300 ÷ 30). At $3.50 per gallon, the fuel cost is $35 (10 × $3.50).

Why is UK MPG different from US MPG?

The difference comes down to the size of a gallon. A US gallon is approximately 3.785 liters, while a UK imperial gallon is larger at exactly 4.546 liters (about 20% larger). Because a UK gallon holds more fuel, a car traveling the same physical distance per liter will show a higher MPG figure in the UK than in the US. A vehicle getting 30 MPG US gets about 36.03 MPG UK.

How do I convert L/100km to MPG?

Liters per 100 Kilometers (L/100km) has an inverse relationship with Miles per Gallon (MPG). To convert to US MPG: divide 235.215 by the L/100km figure. To convert to UK MPG: divide 282.481 by the L/100km figure. For example, a car consuming 8 L/100km gets 235.215 ÷ 8 = 29.4 MPG US, and 282.481 ÷ 8 = 35.3 MPG UK.

Should I include tolls and parking in my trip cost calculation?

Yes, for accurate budgeting, you should include fixed costs like tolls, parking fees, congestion charges, or ferry tickets. This calculator allows you to add these fees directly to calculate the true cost of your journey, which is especially important if you are splitting expenses with other passengers.
